S.Y. Jambo is a 23 metre wooden hull live-aboard, that offers comfortable accommodation for up to 12 guests.
Operated by "One Earth Safaris", S.Y. Jambo provides a perfect base from which to enjoy the outstanding diving available around Pemba Island.
S.Y. Jambo sleeps up to 12 guests in 5 cabins, and a main open salon. 1 cabin is double bedded and 4 are double bunks. There is a facility to sleep 2 extra guests in the main salon if the charter is a private full boat booking, otherwise a maximum of 10 are catered for. All cabins are air-conditioned and have fans. There are 3 toilet showers, with hot cold water. Towels provided.
This live-aboard has an TV salon/bar, above deck dining area and a sundeck. When the breeze picks up her 2 masts and 7 sails, it makes an impressive sight. By day you will anchor and motor along the exotic east coast of Pemba, open to the Indian ocean and offering the most exhilarating diving in east Africa.
The diving is generally drift diving and suitable for experienced / advanced divers when you join a scheduled departure. The east coast is known for its strong currents that are home to excellent opportunities to see pelagic life such as tuna, sharks, turtles, and other open sea fish.
Private charters, group charters and less experienced divers can combine the west coast for some more relaxed diving, where snorkeling and other non diving opportunities are possible.

For 2007 we have re-designed our dive trips to focus on the dive sites most likely to deliver fish, and at the same time not increase prices for the Pemba Island Live aboard trips. We now also have many for divers to select from when they look at East Africa, and the more options Pemba Channel in general.
The key changes are addressed below.
- The guaranteed departures that we offer will start on a Saturday and end in Shimoni as before on a Saturday. The last night, the Friday night will be either in Shimoni or Pemba. The trips therefore will still be sold as a 7 night trip, albeit not all those nights are on S.Y jambo. The first 2 days diving based at Shimoni include each day 2 day dives and 1 night dive (on one of the 2 days). Therefore the actual departure date to Pemba is the Monday night on the S.Y Jambo out of Shimoni.
- The diving in Pemba will be min 3 per day will be focused only on the east coast whenever possible. The entire east coast will be dived, and as a result this is essentially an advanced divers trip due to currents. There will be no diving on the west coast, and this avoids all the areas designated as the new PECCA "marine reserves" with payable marine park fees. However it is possible that if the weather is prohibitively rough an alternative route on the west coast will be selected at the skippers discretion. Clients that are not that experienced should consider our west coast land based diving packages, as if they ask to disembark due to sea sickness, or currents, there is no "exchange" possible.
- The entry into Pemba will be from the north of the island, dive site #11 and working the way down and round to #14, and then proceeding directly back to Shimoni.
- The first 2 days diving will focus on the top dive sites in the northern Pemba channel off Shimoni known for their big fish, and healthy reefs if arriving via mombasa, and the calm west coast of Pemba if arriving via Pemba Island directly.
- These trips are geared to Advanced divers who are either single, couples, divers that want to take advanced diving courses, and people who want to join a group departure for the social element of a live aboard trip.
The result is a better, more focused and flexible week of Diving.
One Earth Diving now consider the absolute best fish dive sites of East Africa to include the shimoni Pemba option.
An alternative option is to start and end the trip based at the Manta Reef Lodge on Pemba itself arriving onto Pemba by flight from Zanzibar. The itinerary remains identical, except that the accommodation would be on Pemba instead of Shimoni and the first 2 days diving is off Pemba west coast.
Included in the trips are the following terms and conditions:
