Zanzibar - the name alone conjures up images of aromatic spices, exotic bazaars and shimmering white beaches.
Zanzibar, or to give it it's real name, Unguja is situated off the coast of Tanzania and is surrounded by the relatively large islands of Pemba and Mafia, as well as hundreds of smaller, often uninhabited islands.

General Do's & Dont's For Zanzibar

Being a Muslim society it is important to remember a few do's and dont's, as not to offend the islands inhabitants.

1. DON'T buy shells, coral or turtle shells from the street vendors, as they are taken from endangered reefs and other marine species and it only encourages the destruction of the ocean fauna.

2. DON'T
walk around the towns and villages dressed in bikinis or miniskirts, due to the locals Islamic faith women should have their shoulders covered and should wear trousers or long skirts and men should not walk around without shirts.

3. DON'T
go to the tourist beaches topless, swimwear is acceptable

4. DON'T take valuables to the beach and DON'T
go alone to the beaches at night.

5. DON'T
accept transport from unlicensed beach boys, only use tour agencies or government guides.

6. DO
report any intimidation from locals in Stone Town

7. DO
remember that during the month of Ramadan, it is highly disrespectful to eat or drink in the streets as the Muslims are fasting.

8. DON'T
take pictures of people or private houses unless you have asked for permission.

9. DON'T
forget that although alcohol is freely available, drunken behaviour is considered an offense in the Moslim society

10. DON'T give money or gifts to children as it encourages begging.
