Mafia Island is the largest of a small archipelago of island and atolls and is truly a paradise in the Indian Ocean. It is the southern most of the three islands (Pemba & Zanzibar) located off the coast of Tanzania.
No-one is actually sure how this island got its name. The most commonly cited explanation is that the word 'mafia' is derived from an old Arabic phrase meaning 'nobody there'.
